  1. Molly Pitcher says:

Well…the talk yesterday…a better description of the subject would be: more guns, less crime. Lott had his usual facts and stats, and I listened carefully. He’s very clear on how he uses them, and doesn’t stretch a point too far.

For example, if a city abolishes its gun ban, and there is a drop in crime, Lott might mention that the police undertook some new policing methods at the same time as a factor also if that’s the case. That kind of carefulness is impressive. It isn’t always seen in such politically-charged areas.

He talked a lot about DC after the Heller case, and Chicago after the gun ban was struck down there.

Did you know that from the late ’20s til 1963, commercial pilots were REQUIRED to carry weapons? That is because they were often transporting mail, so they were acting as security for that. Between ’63 and 79, it was allowed but not mandatory. Then…guess whose administration put an end to even that??

    • The Raven says:

Did you read the book Freakonomics ?? They looked statistically at the rapid drop in crime in the late 80’s and weeded out factors that weren’t causal. They looked at guns, new policing methods (ala Guilianni), the economy, politics, enforcement, jail time, etc and found only small contributions. When all was said and done, they came up with the most significant cause in crime drop was Roe v Wade (Single urban mothers had less births in ’70’s and therefore less teenagers terrorizing the neighborhoods in the late 80’s and 90’s.

    • The Raven says:

They (authors) could be Dems, however.

    • Molly Pitcher says:

That’s right…I remember that idea from that book now that you mention it.

  2. Jemian says:

    Prayer alert:

Dog just posted this on FB:

Had an unexpected overnite stay in the hospital….blood pressurd went thru the roof..i am now taking bp meds…and to change my ways and get healthy again….this episode scared the hell out of me…..wish me luck.

    Prayers up, Jim!

  3. edinva says:

lysie, thanks for that hearty breakfast. Today we will have breakfast for dinner since I am STILL quite full from last night’s dinner, #2 to celebrate the hub’s birthday. Went to a fabulous Italian restaurant. Too much temptation there! Even shared a cannoli with my brother-in-law. And I never eat dessert. Oh, well, nothing a good 3-mile walk can’t fix.

One of the best aspects of going out last night was missing the FL debate. I am really having a hard time accepting where the campaigns and superPACs, especially Romney’s, have gone. Embarrassing, shameful. Makes me want to just stay home next November. What do these people do after the nominating process is over? How do they look at themselves in the mirror? And why are they giving O such an easy path to re-election? Argh.

Rainy, dreary day here, but not white! And not cold, either, so that’s OK by me. Before long I can complain about the clawing heat!

Hope y’all have a beautiful day.

    • Molly Pitcher says:

Agree…that’s why it’s good news there are no debates for awhile.

In just about every debate, there have been some good moments, but especially lately, they have degenerated into mudball.

cannoli! Yum, yum! You did very well , by my standards, to share, and not eat a whole one! So don’t be too hard on yourself.

  4. tillacum says:

Just what we’re having this a.m., no toast.

  5. lysie says:

    Bundle up. Stay warm.

  6. Molly Pitcher says:

    Good morning!

    No more debates for awhile??

Have to go out in the ****. Back later

  7. lysie says:

My sister-in-law went to visit her sister who is in the hosptal and gravely ill. Greg and I spent several hours with dad last night. Once again, I made sausage, peppers, onions, potatoes and mushrooms. Dad said he hasn’t had that in years and had a second helping.

After dinner, we watched what dad enjoys on TV, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and America’s Funniest Home Videos. I haven’t watched those shows in years. That makes dad and me even in things not done in years. 🙂

    • Molly Pitcher says:

Very nice lysie…some good memories there.

I’m in a little bit of a funk: watched a disturbing movie over the weekend, now I’m reading a tense book, and it’s too much.

BUT in between, I went to see The Artist which is a very good, entertaining movie…there’s a little dog in it – forget the breed – but it almost steals the whole show!

    • lysie says:

After you are done with the book, treat yourself to some silliness.

Thanks for the movie review. I may check it out.

    • tillacum says:

I’ve never fixed that dish. It sounds lovely. I think I’ll try that tonight. Sweet sausage?

    • lysie says:

till, dad and Greg prefer hot, but sweet would work. Don’t forget to add a little parm. cheese before eating.

    • edinva says:

lysie, how is your sister-in-law’s sister (and your sil) doing? I’ve had on prayer list and think of them every day.

    • lysie says:

Thanks, ed. Your prayers are appreciated.

My sister-in-laws sister is still in the hospital. The family hasn’t quite figured out where she is going for treatments, but are leaning toward Sloan-Kettering or a place in Pittsburg.

    • Molly Pitcher says:

Prayers for your SIL’s sister…and for her caregivers and doctors.

I’ll report on John Lott’s comments tomorrow….but so glad I went, and I got to meet him also.

The movie I mentioned was: The Professional with Leon Reno, Gary Oldman and a young, amazingly effective Natalie Portman. I got hooked because of the relationship between the Reno and Portman characters…but the movie is so violent and disturbing…that’s the part that’s hard to put aside.

    • lysie says:

      Thank you, Molly.

  8. The Raven says:

Sowell is right — let’s pick one and get serious and stop with the stuff from 30 years ago. You know what Zero was doing 30 years ago?

    • Molly Pitcher says:

      reading Alinsky, for one thing,

      I will read Sowell’s column.

    • Molly Pitcher says:

How did you find the Levin book?

    • lysie says:

Excellent , Dr. Sowell column, Molly. Thanks.

This country finds herself at a critical turning point. Let’s stop bickering over spilled milk and put out the fire that’s burning.

    • Molly Pitcher says:

I just heard someone say on the radio that 0 says 1 thing and does another, completely contradictory…the whole SOTU was full of such things…

that’s what I was thinking about yesterday, and came up with this analogy which I tried out with my husband at supper: It’s as if I declare: I have to be in San Francisco by Sat….so I’ll start driving there Thurs. huh??!!

Guess what? Going to hear John Lott, the 2nd Amendment advocate, speak today…

    • lysie says:

Excellent analogy. How about???? “I haven’t eaten in days. I’m starved. I’ll eat next week.” Ha! Or… I fell in a mud puddle. I’m covered with mud. I’ll get cleaned in the morning after a good night’s sleep. 😉

Why would anyone with the screen name Molly Pitcher be interested in John Lott speak about the second amendment??? /s LOL 🙂

Have fun. Please , when you can, give us a report.

    • The Raven says:

I red maybe 20 pages of Levin’s book and put it down—because of chores not because it was bad. On the contrary – it is one of those books you can savor a sentence for a while. Little bit of philosophy from Mark.

  9. Prairie says:

Iowa Granny slipped on the ice yesterday and now has a broken ankle. I didn’t know about her mil’s death, so sorry to read that.

What really happened in the Gingrich ethics case?

A very good trip down memory lane.

    • Jemian says:

I’m feeling much better today. I can actually move my arm up and/or across w/o gasping in pain. I’m still babying myself today.

I’m also keeping a close weather eye on the outside. We’re under a tornado watch until 5 pm. AGAIN.

  10. Jemian says:

Prayers for Iowa Granny and her family in the loss of IG’s mother-in-law. I don’t know any of the particulars.

    • lysie says:

Prayers up for IG and family.

      How are you, Jem?

    • Jemian says:

I am in quite a bit of pain. I’m borderline going to the doc. But for the nonce, I think I’ll save the money.

    • edinva says:

      Prayers, too, for IG’s family.

Jemian .. not familiar with the nature of your pain, but pain is nature’s way of telling us something ain’t right. Last year, I was in pain and suffered it for about three days despite family insistence I go to the doc. Finally it got to the point where I couldn’t handle it any more and (of course, that time arriving at the crack of dawn) had to go to ER (more costly than doc’s office). Turned out it was gall bladder that had to be removed, no big whoop, except had I gone when family suggested, could have had non-invasive removal, but delay caused them to have to cut. Just sayin’

    • Molly Pitcher says:

Jemian…thanks for letting us know about IG.

    • Jemian says:

Well, I was running through the house playing with Gail’s dog and something happened and I fell. So, I hurt both my knees and my left shoulder. My shoulder is the problem. I wish I could easily determine the extent of the injury. I just can’t afford another trip to the doctor’s, even with insurance.

    • edinva says:

I hear ya! Hope it is better really soon. Have you done epsom salts soak baths? That’s a reasonable alternative for any kind of muscle pain. Sure can’t hurt. (I don’t know if it’s the epsom salts OR the 20 minutes of peace and quiet that make one feel better)

    • tillacum says:

So sorry to hear that. Her MIL was so independent. Prayers for the family.

    • Jemian says:

Ed, I went through the gall bladder emergency a few years ago. It truly caught me by surprise. I would have gone to the ER this AM except I went to the doc’s in the spring with a ruptured disk. Then, in July, I was having a serious panic attack. In August, I stepped on some glass going down the stairs and thought I might have broken my foot. FWIW, the doc that time didn’t find the glass and LD removed it a week later. In late October, I sprained my ankle and have just this past week been able to take the boot off. I really don’t want to go back again. I think I’m a bit of a hypochondriac but my daughters have assured these are genuine injuries and therefore don’t qualify for hypochondria. LOL!

    • edinva says:

Jemian, I’m with your daughters .. hardly hypochondria. And just getting the boot off, that was a long time. Guess I wouldn’t be rushing to the docs, either. Last thing any of us likes to do.

  11. Jemian says:

    Good morning.

Thank you, Molly, for your good wishes about Monday’s tornados. We were south of the exciting weather and fared well. The spring-like weather has my daffodils in bloom and the buds on my Chinese Magnolia begin to open.

I am ignoring everything concerning the SOTU. I haven’t been following the election news [much] and am just trying to think calm and peaceful thoughts.

  12. Molly Pitcher says:

Thanks lysie Your breakfast has brightened a dull a.m….

    Wed. already!?

  13. The Raven says:

Well…I passed one million lifetime flight miles on United……I now get permanent premier status (which includes spouse)

    • Molly Pitcher says:

Is there a way to tax those status benefits, you hi flyin’ capitalist??!!

      It’s just not FAIR!

    • edinva says:

Molly, don’t joke … on news I heard they are requiring airlines to send info on FF miles for tax purposes.. I can’t wait to get a 1099 or W-2 form from Staples for the $3.99 refund from that ream of paper I bought last year. And, am going to go back and retry that link.

Rav, don’t know whether to congratulate you or offer condolences. Flying has become such a nightmare over the past few years, but with permanent premier status you can bypass some of those problems faced by peons. And, for some destinations flying is the only option available. (btw, are you known elsewhere as Raven6?)

Is it true that the 5 GOP president appointed Justices didn’t go to SOTU last night? It’s probably because they have the Obamacare hearings scheduled for March, tho that didn’t stop the D-appointed Justices from attending if what I read is correct. Interesting that Kennedy “swung” with the GOP. (reading tea leaves) It was so nice to just not pay any attention whatsoever. Wonder what his ratings for last night are.

I’ve awakened to a beautiful, sunny, not so cold day. I’ll take it for as along as it lasts!

      Be blessed today, all

    • lysie says:

Cool. That is a lot of miles.

    • lysie says:

“We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.” Ayn Rand

  14. The Raven says:

Well, well…..he wants more taxes. What a surprise. This country has finite wealth and we can grow that wealth if we don’t give it to Obama. He’s wasted the money we’ve already given him.

  15. Prairie says:

Molly and lysie and everybody…Hello! I am okay…actually feeling a little under the weather today so I’m taking it a bit easy, I expect will be up and around normally in a day or two.

Since I’m going to miss the music jam tonight I’ll follow the threads on the SOTU. Unless I find something better to watch, which wouldn’t be hard.

What about that BOOORRRRRIIINNG debate last night on NBC?? Sheesh,

    • edinva says:

Good morning, all. And thank you lysie for the lovely mufffin and coffee.

Molly, I tried the NRO site, and after a single paragraph it required registration with a note that I may qualify for education loans? Oh, well.

Am I alone in not caring how much $ Romney either made or paid in taxes? Good for him! Our local radio guy just said “over the past 2 years, Mitt Romney probably gave more money to charity than I will earn in my lifetime.”

Warm, sunny day ahead with a high temp @ 55. Our break between days of rain. Alas, rain is NOT white! Past few mornings have been foggy; yesterday was foggy AND icy, so late opening for government workers.

As of now I am planning to just boycott the SOTU tonight. Don’t need high blood pressure or nausea. Agree wtth lysie, it’s bad enough to have to read his ‘stuff.’

    • Molly Pitcher says:

oh my…will check to see if I have a problem, too..

    • Molly Pitcher says:

ED..the above link is for an NRO video with Peter Robinson and 2 constitutional scholars talking about 0Care. It’s part of a series: Uncommon Knowledge, and I had no problem watching it…is this the link you’re referring to?

    • lysie says:

I was able to watch the Uncommon Knowledge video.

The slopes keep getting slipperier and slipperier.

  16. lysie says:

I’m not sure if I’ll be watching. I can’t stand hearing the lies. It’s bad enough reading about them.

  17. Molly Pitcher says:

Hey lysie….Ready for the SOTU??!! Gad, I can safely predict that it’ll be angering beyond belief.

  18. lysie says:

John Hinderaker’s, Obama’s Government vs. Your Family, is an excellent article, Molly.
Obama believing and saying , “that government should not intrude on private family matters” makes me wonder what world he lives in because it sure isn’t mine.

  19. lysie says:

Obama is so egotistical he would love to have an ism named after him.

How about we name a few isms just for him?

    Me first…. uh-ism and I-ism.

  20. lysie says:

Molly, our weekend went well with the exception of the SU basketball loss.

  21. edinva says:

Thought I’d share with ATRW a friend’s post at Facebook last night:

At the Wizards game today .. coming to his seat, John King of CNN. He leaves the Wizards game as the fourth quarter starts, I said “John, don’t leave, we’re down, but we’re gonna win this by 20″… he says to me and Rahn Jackson, sitting behind me– “gotta go watch my Pats, and everytime I’m here they lose, heck that’s my life, if I’m in the building whoever is there loses” …. and Rahn says “Not Newt”!… John King shrugs and leaves the building…. classic moment.

  22. Molly Pitcher says:

Bennett’s show featuring Etta James’s music

    prairie Hope you’re ok

  23. Molly Pitcher says:

Busy a.m., but back this afternoon…lots of computer work to do.

    Rain, and high winds here.

    Your weekend all right lysie?

  24. Molly Pitcher says:

Just glanced at a story’s headlines: house to house search in Birmingham for victims of last night’s storms

    Good a.m. to all….

  25. The Raven says:

    >>continued fall-out from the S.C. primary shock-er-roo.
Might stir up Nancy Pelosi again with her super Newt secrets.

  26. edinva says:

Molly, frightening prospect for folks along that AR/TN corridor. I wouldn’t be able to sleep all night. But I imagine the tornado signal system is pretty good in that area. Let’s pray if there any touchdowns, they’re far removed from anyone’s home.

Somehow, I just can’t get excited about the SOTU. We can only hope it’s his last.

    • Jemian says:

Cain is giving the “Tea Party Rebuttal” speech.

I’m not excited about that either. Constitutionally, the POTUS need not put on this dog-and-pony campaign speech. But, since the SOTU is made in person to the Congress and it is required by the Constitution, the networks do NOT have to grant equal time.

FYI, the Constitution requires a report on the SOTU, but it doesn’t have to be a formal speech to the Congress. Previously, the presidents wrote it down and mailed it in.

    • edinva says:

Jemian, elect me POTUS and I’ll txt it in, how’s that ?

My fav part of the SOTU is always how Hurricane Jackson-Lee pushes for visibility, clinging to the aisle to greet POTUS, even W. It’s all about the camera!

    • Molly Pitcher says:

Hey Jemian You ok after those storms?

I’m having trouble getting started on afternoon’s tasks…

Limbaugh’s theory: the base is using Gingrich to send message to the party’s establishment…

  27. Molly Pitcher says:

Some dangerous weather crossing Arkansas and moving into w. TN…hope all in the path of this storm are able to stay safe. Darkness and tornadoes make a bad combination
